Secrets of a Los Angeles Magician

Reel Magic Magazine

Reel Magic Magazine

Reel Magic Magazine, a DVD publication for magicians, filmed a segment at the Magic Castle featuring me and three other magicians.

Reel Magic Magazine is one of the premiere publications in the magic industry, with subscribers all over the world. My friend Jon Armstrong regularly appears in each issue, and he hosted a discussion on professional performance.

Jon Armstrong has three instructional DVD’s about magic with playing cards, and he lectures for magicians all over the world. Jon talked about a little-known card move that can add flash to any act. I talked about what I feel is the best way to tear and restore a borrowed $100 dollar bill. I hope other magicians find my advice useful.

Like any profession, magic has it’s own publications. The most popular are Genii, MAGIC Magazine, and Reel Magic. What makes Reel Magic unique is that it’s a DVD magazine, featuring video articles, interviews, and in-depth magic instruction. As the tagline says… it’s “TV for Magicians.”

I had a lot of fun, and I hope I’m asked to participate again!

Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo

Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo

So we saw Lance Burton’s show on Wednesday.

The fact that we’re both full-time professional magicians means that we can be a pretty jaded audience. I mean seriously, we’re a VERY critical audience.

But what can I say… Lance Burton was the best large-scale magic show I’ve ever seen! I loved it. I really, really loved it.

Lance Burton was charming, he connected with his audience, and he didn’t let the tricks outshine his personality. And the tricks fooled me! I can’t tell you how rare it is to get fooled by magic. Being amazed is a wonderful experience, and it is one I don’t get to feel too often anymore.

The audience loved him, too. While waiting for my friend at the restrooms, I heard people talking, and all agreed he was well worth the ticket price.

Lance Burton is a true master magician, and I’m really glad I got to see him at the Monte Carlo before his show closes. His last show is Sept. 4th, 2010. Go there while you still can!

After seeing Arian Black, Bruce Gold, and Penn & Teller & Shaq, Lou and I have tickets to see Master Magician Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo.

Lance is consistently rated the best magic show in Las Vegas. Most of my magician friends are shocked when they hear I’ve never seen his show.

However, before we get to the show, we’re going to check out the pool at the Hard Rock Hotel. I really love staying at this place.

Didn’t think I’d be making another post today, but Arian, Bruce, Lou and I went off to the Rio after Arian’s show to check out Penn & Teller.

Penn & Teller are one of the greatest magic acts around, and I really, really love their thinking.

They filmed a segment on stage with Shaq (the basketball star). Shaq tried his best to perform magic. Magic is a lot tougher to do than most people think, as Shaq discovered.

He did a great job though. He seems like a truly nice guy. Plus… he’s really, really tall in person.

Secrets - Arian Black's Magic Show

My friend (and fellow magician) Lou and I are heading up to Las Vegas tomorrow to play some blackjack, have a few Manhattans, and enjoy some great magic shows.

First on the list is Secrets, starring Arian Black, at the Westin Hotel and Casino, one block off of the Strip. I saw Arian perform at the Magic Castle about a year ago, and I’m really looking forward to enjoying her full show.

Bruce Gold, who I am proud to call a friend, performs stand-up comedy in the show as well. Bruce is more than a great comedian, he’s also acted as a magic consultant to famous magicians all over the world.

Man… I have cool friends!

I performed my strolling magic at a beautiful wedding reception last weekend. The wedding was held at Calamigos Ranch, in Malibu, CA. It was rustic, but elegant.

While the newlyweds were busy with the photographers, I kept all of the guests entertained in the reception area. Once the newlyweds arrived, I performed a short, romantically-themed piece for them with the videographer. I can’t wait to see the video footage. It should be great!

Wedding receptions are only a tiny part of my overall business, but I really enjoy entertaining at them. I even created a web page just about them. You can see it at www.Reception-Magic.com.

Torrance Cultural Arts Center

Torrance Cultural Arts Center

This was a busy weekend of magic performances. On Friday I had the pleasure of entertaining the VIP’s at the annual fundraiser for the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. “Magic” was the theme for the fundraiser, and I wasn’t the only magician performing that night.

Also on the bill were magicians Bill Goodwin, Jon Armstrong, Chipper Lowell, Chris Hart, and actor/comedian Larry Miller. It was my first time working with Chipper Lowell… and he was great. His stage persona is completely wacky… but behind the scenes he’s a total pro. Also nice to meet Mr. Miller. I’m a big fan of his work.

All in all it was a fun experience. The guests at the fundraiser had a terrific time! They told the organizer that it was the best fundraiser the organization had ever had!

I can only take about 1/6th of the credit… but that’s good enough for me. :-)

The Hotel from Rodeo Drive

The Hotel from Rodeo Drive

I’ve performed my award-winning strolling magic at a lot of wedding receptions, but the the Beverly Wilshire Hotel is one of my favorite venues. The view is fabulous and the service is top notch.

I was hired on May 30th to entertain during a wedding reception. It’s a great way to entertain everyone while the newlyweds are busy with the photographer. First, I entertained everyone who was waiting in line for drinks (the line was a mile long), and later I entertained small groups of people during the cocktail hour. I guess it was a typical strolling magic situation… but the venue really made it special.

The Beverly Wilshire has what I look for in a strolling venue. An open floor plan, lots of room for all guests, and an atmosphere ready for magic!

A Very Tired Joe Skilton @ The Magic Castle

All good things must come to an end, and my weeklong engagement at The Magic Castle ends tonight.

I love performing at the Magic Castle. The ambiance, the audiences, and the 100+ year history of the place make it truly unique; especially for Los Angeles. Even the Magic Circle in London can’t compete.

I’ve been doing a special 20-minute close-up magic show, which is based on my 45-minute close-up show that I performed at Mystique and at private parties throughout Los Angeles.

It’s been lots of fun and once my schedule clears up again, I look forward to being back at the Castle.

Magic Castle 2010

The Magic Castle - Hollywood CA

I’ve been performing my show at the Magic Castle all week long. The Castle is a private club for magicians, and is considered the best magic venue in the world. I’ve entertained audiences with my magic lots of times at the Castle… and it’s always an honor.

Last night I did 5 shows, and I’ll probably do at least 6 today. The crowds have been really strong, and I’ve been getting some terrific reviews from guests. Although I’m pretty tired, I’m also really, really happy.

Photos to come!
