I’m going to be revealing the REAL secrets about magic, magicians, and our crazy corner of the entertainment industry. Here’s the first secret:
Most magicians are amateurs… and a very large percentage of amateur magician are lawyers and doctors. (really!) In fact, some of the best magicians in the country are successful lawyers and physicians. Here’s just a few respected lawyer/magicians:
Personally… I’d never want to be a lawyer or a doctor. I have tons of respect for what they do… but it just isn’t for me. I feel very fortunate that I can make a living as a magician in Los Angeles.
A lot of people focus on the “big name” professionals in the business, but amateur magicians and magic enthusiasts are a very important part of the magic community. Magic enthusiasts keep the magic shops open. They buy the tickets for David Copperfield and watch the magic specials on TV. Most importantly… they have a huge creative influence in the magic world. Many of the most important magical minds, such as Dai Vernon, Ed Marlo, and Larry Jennings never made a living from performing.
Kinda nifty, huh?
